Meet Timothy Shea

Dr. Timothy P. Shea is an educator, scholar, and writer whose career spans classrooms and universities across five continents. He earned his Ph.D. in English Education from the University of Virginia, where his dissertation, Reel Writing: Using Documentaries in Adolescent Composition, combined his passions for literacy, storytelling, and film. Dr. Shea has since dedicated his career to helping students find their voices as writers and thinkers while engaging global stories that expand their horizons.

Currently, he teaches at York College of Pennsylvania, offering courses in global cinema, advanced composition, rhetoric, and storytelling. His teaching emphasizes cultural literacy, critical thinking, and personal expression, whether through close analysis of international films, reflective writing, or cross-cultural narratives. With over two decades of experience in secondary and higher education, he has been recognized with multiple teaching awards, including the Richard Meade Award for English Education Excellence.

Dr. Shea’s professional interests include writing pedagogy, global film studies, adolescent literacy, and the intersections of storytelling, identity, and mindfulness. He is also an active poet and creative writer, often weaving together personal travel, local Pennsylvania imagery, and international experiences from teaching in Kenya, China, and beyond. His work reflects a deep commitment to community, empathy, and the transformative power of story.

Above all, Dr. Shea is known for his engaging, student-centered approach and his belief that stories—whether on the page, on screen, or in lived experience—help us better understand ourselves and one another.
