When Sidd Pawar founded Envision Biomedical in 2020, he set out to solve complex materials science challenges through innovative polymer research.
What began as a vision to improve materials for the medical device industry has evolved into a successful business, a source of experiential learning for students, and now, a catalyst for growth within York’s entrepreneurial ecosystem.
Today, Pawar's work extends well beyond a single company. Through Envision Biomedical and his growing role with Independent Ink, he is helping build a model for how industry, entrepreneurship, and higher education can work together to create opportunities for both businesses and students.
Building Envision Biomedical
Located within the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship's business incubator, Envision Biomedical develops advanced polymer materials and technologies for applications ranging from medical devices and diagnostics to coatings, specialty inks, and additive manufacturing. Over the past several years, Pawar and his business partner, Jay Kunzler, have successfully adapted to changing market opportunities while remaining focused on innovation and scientific excellence.
Their ability to identify opportunities and pivot strategically has helped Envision Biomedical grow from an early-stage startup into a trusted research and development partner serving a wide range of industries.
"Starting Envision Biomedical was about more than launching a company,” says Pawar. “It was about creating a place where science solves real-world problems. York College gave us the support, partnerships, and entrepreneurial environment to turn an idea into a growing business, and that foundation continues to drive everything we do.”
Creating Opportunities for Students
One of the defining characteristics of Envision Biomedical's growth has been its commitment to student engagement.
Through its partnership with York College and the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, the company has provided students interested in engineering, chemistry, research, product development, and entrepreneurship with hands-on opportunities. Students have worked directly on real-world projects, gaining experience that extends far beyond the classroom.
For Pawar, investing in students is not simply about filling positions—it's about helping develop the next generation of innovators.
"Working with Sidd has been a unique opportunity because I was trusted with projects that have real impact,” says Corbin Koller, a junior Chemistry Major at York College. “I have been able to apply what I learned in the classroom while developing the technical and professional skills that will benefit me throughout my career.”
A New Chapter with Independent Ink
As Envision Biomedical continued to expand its capabilities, new opportunities emerged.
Pawar recently began working with Independent Ink, a California-based company that manufactures inks used in coding and marking for a diverse array of industries. Through this partnership, he is leading efforts to establish laboratory capabilities within the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, creating an environment where research, testing, and product innovation can occur alongside student engagement and entrepreneurial activity.
The lab represents more than a new facility. It demonstrates how incubator companies can grow into long-term partners that strengthen the entire entrepreneurial ecosystem.
By building advanced research capabilities within the Center, Pawar is helping create additional opportunities for York College students while supporting the growth of innovative businesses in the region.
"Independent Ink allows us to bring advanced research and product development directly into the J.D. Brown Center,” says Pawar. “By building these laboratory capabilities here, we are creating opportunities for students to gain industry experience while helping innovative companies develop new technologies without leaving our community."
Growing the Innovation Ecosystem
For the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship, Pawar's journey reflects the incubator's mission: helping entrepreneurs start, grow, and remain connected to the community.
What began as a startup company within the incubator has evolved into a growing network of businesses, student opportunities, and research initiatives. As Envision Biomedical and Independent Ink continue to expand, Pawar envisions increasing collaboration with York College and eventually contributing to broader growth in both the Center and Knowledge Park.
His story demonstrates what can happen when entrepreneurial ambition is paired with community partnership and a commitment to developing talent.
