Honoring Our Student and Faculty Veterans

alt

York College is home to students from a variety of backgrounds and experiences, many of which are either currently or have served in the military. Now, they are pursuing an education thanks to the support of the College.

Today is Veterans Day, and York College of Pennsylvania wishes to shine a spotlight on the many students and faculty who have served and are active duty members.

York College offers a variety of veteran programs and benefits members of the College community pursuing an education or working on campus. With a total of 44 students on campus, with 16 currently serving and 28 with prior service, they have found many ways to take advantage of them and pursue what they are passionate about.

Not only do veterans on campus have access to the Student Veterans Lounge, but they also get to utilize reserved parking spots and take advantage of priority registration to ensure they get to take the classes they need to meet their major requirements.

Many of these benefits were the result of the Military and Veterans Advocacy Committee and their desire to ensure that the veteran students who come to York College are able to succeed in their studies and get the most of their education. Faculty members such as David Fyfe, Ph.D,  Associate Professor of Geography, and Robyn Maitoza, Ph.D, Associate Professor of Human Studies, were especially keen on helping students adjust to student life.

As Dr. Fyfe put it, many students struggled with making the transition from the strict schedule the military expected of their members and needed help learning “how to be a student” in today’s world. So, creating programs such as a first-year seminar program for veterans to help with that adjustment was vital.

Also, reminding veterans that they are not alone and many resources are available to them should they need them. One such is Buddy Check 22, where veterans receive emails on the 22nd of every month checking in on them offering a space to talk should they need it.

Our students have found many subjects to excel in as well. It has been found that veterans tend to matriculate into fields related to business and healthcare, but have also found specialties in majors such as Cyber Security, Communications, and Human Services.

We wish to thank all of our veterans for their service to our country. If you or anyone you know wishes to learn more about our program for veterans, please be sure to check out our website.
