Northside Commons New Wing Now Open for Students Ahead of Move-In Day
Long before the green ribbon fell Thursday and the first moving boxes arrive next week, Northside Commons was already the heartbeat of residential life at York College.
Since it first opened in 2011, Northside Commons has served as a bustling crossroads for campus connection.
On Thursday, August 13, college leaders, elected officials, and community partners gathered to officially open the building's brand-new wing. After sixteen months of planning and steady hard work, that campus heartbeat just got a whole lot louder.
From Vision to Groundbreaking
The journey to expanded campus living officially started in April 2025, when college leaders and community partners turned the first ceremonial shovels of dirt. The goal was ambitious: build a modern, 204-bed expansion that met the evolving needs of today’s college students, while staying on time and on budget, ready to open to students in August 2026.
Achieving that balance required listening directly to the experts who would actually live there, the students themselves.
"The expansion of Northside Commons is a major leap forward in how we support our students," said Dr. Thomas Burns, President of York College. "This living-learning community is far more than housing—it’s a dynamic space built to foster connection and growth that will serve as a campus fixture for decades to come."
Designed for Connection and Success
Step inside the new wing, and the student-driven design is immediately clear. High-speed secure Wi-Fi and modern climate control ensure maximum comfort, while fresh, updated furniture gives every room a crisp, contemporary feel. Expanded hang-out areas, study lounges, collaborative spaces, and a communal kitchen invite students to gather, while new outdoor courtyards and recreational spaces will be ready later this fall.
For Lindsey Hobson, Director of Residence Life, these intentional design choices directly impact the student experience.
"We know from extensive data that students who live on campus thrive," Hobson shared. "Living on campus helps them build strong support systems, maintain engagement, and succeed academically as well. Every space in this new wing was designed to support these exact results. From study lounges, collaborative spaces, a communal kitchen, to outdoor courtyards, it is clear this building will be home to formative student experiences such as academic success, lifelong friendships, and unforgettable memories."
A Shared Community Achievement
Bringing a project of this scale across the finish line on time and on budget took a true team effort between campus administrators, local vendors, and community leaders. The ceremony brought together campus leadership alongside State Senator Dawn Keefer, State Representative Carol Hill-Evans, Mayor Sandie Walker, President Commissioner Julie Wheeler, and representatives from the offices of Senator John Fetterman, Senator Dave McCormick, and State Senator Kristin Phillips-Hill.
"Bringing a vision of this scale to life requires exceptional partners, and we could not have asked for better leadership than Stewart & Tate in partnership with our top-notch local vendors," Dr. Burns noted. "This ribbon cutting is a testament to what happens when our campus and local community work hand in hand."
The project was even used as a hands-on learning experience for some York College students. In November 2025, a group of Civil Engineering majors took a hard-hat tour from project leaders.

The Magic Begins
With the ribbon officially cut, the building now enters its most exciting phase: welcoming its new residents.
"This building now belongs to the students," Hobson said. "Move-in day is when the real magic happens. In exactly a week, this building will be full of students and their loved ones, and probably many move-in carts and boxes as well."
As suitcases are unpacked and the new wing comes alive with laughter, footsteps, and music, Northside Commons begins its next chapter—ready to welcome generations of Spartans home.
