Vincent Pagano, a senior Computer Engineering major from Newark, DE, is organizing a design competition for National Engineers Week (Feb. 18-24) with help from the YCP Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) Student Branch, which he chairs, and other Engineering student clubs on campus.

The competition, scheduled from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Feb. 24, provides students from any major an opportunity to collaborate on a real-world, open-ended problem, according to Pagano.

“This year, we are focusing on smart and sustainable transportation systems,” he said. “Students working in teams of up to four are given a variety of different materials and software programs to develop their particular solution. Throughout the event, we have both alumni and industry professionals available as resources for the participants in case they have questions. At the end, teams present their ideas to a panel of industry professionals, who then judge them based on various factors such as feasibility and cost.”

Participants receive a T-shirt and are fed throughout the day. Winners will have an opportunity to choose their prizes.

“We are fortunate that the event is being sponsored by a few engineering companies that work closely with York College,” he said.

From August to December 2023, Pagano served as a software engineering intern at C.S. Davidson, participating in code reviews and managing client and team requests. He has also worked as an electrical engineering intern at James Posey Associates, Inc. in Owings Mills, MD, and as a controls engineering intern at Multi-Dimensional Integration in Shrewsbury, PA.

At York College, Pagano has served as a resident assistant for three years and as a peer advisor for one year. He is a member of the Senior Honor Society.
