YCP@Work: Colbe Herr, IMG Academy

September 20, 2022

Colbe Herr graduated from York College in 2014 with a Sport Management degree. He currently works as a Sponsorship Account Executive for IMG Academy, a preparatory boarding school and sports training institution in Bradenton, Florida.

What made you choose to pursue a degree in this field?

Passion for sports, business, and the competition/challenges this industry faces.

Describe a typical day on the job.

A typical day is 100% atypical. I could be planning a multiday retreat for one of our partners, administering [a] content shoot, golf-carting around campus to check on signage/other marketing deliverables, ideating with internal departments about the best ways to immerse our partners within the student community, and executing hundreds of gear kits for our student/staff family! There really is no typical day, which is why I love it.

How have you used your York College education since graduating?

I have used my education from YCP in my ways. As a former student-athlete, the lessons learned on and off the field have opened so many doors. I am one of the fortunate ones to still be fully immersed in the sports industry in multiple angles–business, coaching, etc.

What is most challenging about a career in this field?

The most challenging area in a career such as sports is that there's a requirement to dig deep and work hard with sometimes little reward in the beginning. You will reap the benefits from the sports industry if you put your head down and go!

What do you like best about your career?

The people I've met over the years have been absolutely amazing. I have been blessed to cross paths with so many influential, mentor-minded professionals that have molded me into the person I am today.

What advice would you have for a student who is just starting out in this major?

Be prepared to work, be comfortable with being uncomfortable, and always compete!
