York College Celebrates Black History Month with Culture, Food, and History

Take a look at some of the events the College and the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion have planned for Black History Month and its observance from February 1st to the 28th.
In celebration of Black History, York College of Pennsylvania and the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion (SDI) will host various events that will be open to all students on campus.
Recognizing the significance of the many cultural backgrounds that make up the York College community has always remained an integral part of the campus, so being able to commemorate the history and heritage of its Black student body is a wonderful experience for all.
“The Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion works in partnership with student organizations and our colleagues at YCP to develop programming for Black History Month in addition to our signature BHM programs every February,” Alexander B. Hernández-Siegel, Director of the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, said.
“The American Mosaic in culture and society is one that should be celebrated, as well as honoring the legacies of everyone within that mosaic. The honoring of the history of the contributions of African-Americans in shaping our nation is an important priority in the YCP tradition of inclusion.”

If you’re interested in traveling, SDI will charter a bus for students to visit the National Museum of African American History and Culture in Washington, D.C., for a day.
Students will not only get to explore the museum and take in its rich history but also be given the opportunity to explore the area further. This is the perfect opportunity to learn more and truly take in all of the festivities celebrating Black History Month.
Topics of Inclusion and Belonging: Acceptance After Being Accepted - Being a Student of Color in a PWI Campus

At the end of February, York College will invite author and higher education professional Kei-shon Graham to speak about his experiences as a student of color in a predominantly white institution (PWI) and how students of color can succeed in that environment.
Graham currently works at Millersville University as a Residential Area Director. A passionate writer, he published his novel, Uniquely Generic, in 2021. He has received several scholarships and grants, including the James T. Giles Essay Competition, the Intrepid Research Grant, and the Gunard B. Carlson Creative Writing Contest.
“Much to Celebrate”
There is much to celebrate this February, not just the upcoming events on the calendar. Whether through large occasions or small acknowledgments, we recognize the rich history and culture of the African American community on campus and in the community.
“Celebrating Black History Month at York College not only reminds us of the importance of acknowledging the rich contributions of the African American community to American history and society,” Ines M. Ramirez, Assistant Director of the Office of Student Diversity and Inclusion, said, “but it also allows us to purposely explore its diverse culture through experiences and open dialogue between students from diverse backgrounds.
“Many students are already excited to participate in some of our popular programs, and we are proud to celebrate Black History Month!”
