York College of Pennsylvania is deeply saddened to share the news of the tragic passing of Marina Vasconcelos ’22, who died in a crash recently near the University of Delaware.

Marina was a beloved alumna and a member of the inaugural STEM Scholars cohort during her time at York College. A 24-year-old resident of North East, Md., she was a third-year doctoral student at the University of Delaware, pursuing a degree in chemistry and biochemistry. She earned her bachelor's degree in chemistry with minors in biology and Spanish from York College.

Marina was a dedicated chemistry major during her time at York College, engaging in biochemical research.

“I was fortunate to know Marina for four years as an instructor, an advisor, and as a research mentor,” Dr. Brian Gray, Assistant Professor of Biology said. “Her graduate work at the University of Delaware was a continuation of her interest in repeatedly crossing over the boundaries between chemistry and biology, something we talked about from her first month on campus. Marina was stubborn and thoughtful, passionate and persistent, and she believed in a life lived vibrantly and joyously.”

When she wasn’t in the lab, she was maintaining a nearly perfect GPA, serving her peers as a tutor, and working as a lab assistant in the chemistry department.

"She was energetic, inquisitive, and committed to conducting research at the interface of biology and chemistry,” Dr. Jessica Fautch, Associate Professor and Chair of the Department of Chemistry said. “Marina approached every challenge with determination and curiosity. Her passion for science was matched only by her kindness and generosity."

We extend our deepest condolences to Marina’s family, friends, her fiancé Nicolas, and all members of the York College and UD communities who are mourning this tremendous loss.

Information on services, flowers and offers of condolence will be forthcoming.
