September 30, 2022York College of Pennsylvania’s Theatre program will present “Because They Have No Words,” a play about one man’s journey to New Orleans to rescue animals left behind in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, at 7 p.m., Oct. 20-22, in the Waldner Performing Art Center’s Perko black box theatre. Tickets are free but reservations are recommended as seating is limited. Seating reservations may be made by calling the Box Office at 717-600-3868 or through Eventbrite. There is a content advisory for themes of animal death and strong language.
Written by Tim Maddock and Lotti Pharriss Knowles, “Because They Have No Words” is based on Maddock’s real-life experience as he leaves his dog and partner behind and heads straight into the aftermath of the disaster that captured the attention of the nation in 2005. This documentary-style play tackles the chaos, grief, and bureaucratic nightmare at the heart of recovering lost pets. Acell Spencer, a junior theatre major from Catonville, Md., portrays Maddock.
This production is directed by Associate Professor Suzanne Delle, MFA, who has directed numerous shows at York College, including “Mr. Burns, a post-electric play,” “Alice in Wonderland,” and “Eurydice.” First-year theatre majors are featured in supporting roles. In addition to rehearsals, the students have been doing research about Hurricane Katrina and even got to speak to playwright Tim Maddock via Zoom during the process.
