Eruzione scored the game-winning goal against the Soviet Union, which advanced the 1980 U.S. Hockey Team to the Gold Medal Game where they beat Finland and won the Gold, accomplishing what was thought of as an impossible win for the USA. The win over the Soviets led announcer Al Michaels to make one of the most famous calls in history, exclaiming after the win, “Do you believe in miracles? Yes!"
After the victory in Lake Placid, Eruzione spent several years as a sports commentator for Madison Square Garden. In 1984, he joined the ABC Network and was a broadcaster for the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo, the Summer Olympics in Los Angeles, and the 1988 Winter Olympics in Calgary, as well as the 1992 and 1994 Winter Olympic Games. Eruzione is currently employed by Boston University as Director of Special Outreach. He continues to be actively involved with fundraising events for the U.S. Olympic Committee, as well as several charitable organizations including Winthrop Charities.
The 1980 Olympic Team received many accolades after winning the Gold Medal, including being inducted into the United States Hockey Hall of Fame and voted the #1 Sports Moment of the Century by Sports Illustrated. Eruzione and his teammates had the honor of lighting the Olympic Flame at the Opening Ceremonies of the 2002 Winter Olympic Games in Salt Lake City, Utah. In 2004, he and the 1980 Team were featured in the Disney movie “Miracle,” noted as one of the best sports movies of all-time.
