York College of Pennsylvania and York County government are strengthening their shared commitment to workforce development through a pilot program that will provide county employees with access to the York College Career Academy.

The York County Board of Commissioners on Wednesday approved a Memorandum of Understanding with York College that will enable employees in the York County Information Technology Services Department to access the Career Academy online learning platform for flexible professional development and skills enhancement.

“There is a reason one of the county’s strategic anchors is our people,” said York County President Commissioner Julie Wheeler. “Our employees are our most valuable resource, and we are committed to helping them grow, learn and improve so that we can continue to provide exceptional service to our community. With this partnership, our employees can gain access to high-quality professional development through a trusted, local leader in higher education.”

The Career Academy, powered by Coursera, equips learners with job-ready skills in areas like information technology, project management and business operations — fields essential to both public and private sector growth.

“As we continue to build partnerships that strengthen our regional workforce, this agreement with York County underscores our belief that education is a lifelong pursuit,” said Dr. Thomas Burns, President of York College. “We are excited to help county employees advance their careers through accessible and practical professional development opportunities.”

Through this collaboration, county IT employees can select courses that align with their current responsibilities or explore topics that prepare them for future advancement. The flexibility of the platform ensures that learning can be balanced with the demands of public service.

Upon completion of the pilot program, the partnership between the college and the county may expand to include county employees from other departments beyond IT.

This partnership mirrors similar agreements York College has established with regional employers and signals a growing interest in scalable, affordable development tools for organizations of all sizes.  For more information about the York College Career Academy and enrollment details, visit York College Career Academy
