York Country Day School Names Doug Key as Next Head of School

York Country Day School is proud to announce the appointment of Doug Key as its next Head of School, effective July 1, 2025. Key will succeed Dr. Christine Heine, who has served with distinction in the role for the past 11 years.
With more than 20 years of leadership in independent schools, Key brings a wealth of experience to York. He most recently served as Head of School at York School in Monterey, California, where he led innovative curriculum development, expanded community partnerships, and drove strategic enrollment initiatives and philanthropic efforts.
“I am honored to join the York Country Day School community and to build upon the remarkable legacy of Dr. Heine,” said Key. “Her leadership has positioned the school for continued success, and I’m excited to carry that momentum forward. I look forward to deepening the connection between York Country Day School and York College of Pennsylvania, creating even more opportunities for collaboration, innovation, and growth.”
York College of Pennsylvania President Dr. Thomas Burns praised the selection, citing Key’s alignment with the school’s mission and forward-thinking vision.
“Doug Key brings a forward-thinking approach that matches perfectly with our institutional commitments to preparing students for the future,” said Dr. Burns. “His passion for experiential learning and strategic innovation will no doubt elevate the partnership between York Country Day School and York College in meaningful and dynamic ways.”
Key and his wife, Michelle, are excited to be returning to the East Coast. Michelle, a former pre-kindergarten director and elementary school teacher, holds a bachelor's degree from Slippery Rock University in western Pennsylvania. The couple has four children: August, Addison, Chamberlain, and Quincy. The Key family also includes two dogs, Mowgli and Baloo. Key also has family nearby in Philadelphia and Maryland, making the move to York feel even more like a return home.
York Country Day School extends heartfelt appreciation to Dr. Heine for her steadfast leadership. Under her guidance, the school has flourished academically and culturally, leaving a strong foundation for the future.
