Connect with our growing and active Jewish community!

York College Hillel and the Doris and Bernard Gordon Center for Jewish Student Life is a warm, welcoming, and meaningful community where students feel inspired to engage in a Jewish journey, strengthen their personal identities, and deepen their connections to the campus and the world around them.

The Gordon Center serves as a gathering place for all students, faculty, and staff who wish to learn more about Jewish traditions and culture. Whether it means coming together to celebrate Shabbat, piloting new social justice initiatives, learning to bake Challah, or hanging out with friends, the Gordon Center provides an environment where students share new perspectives and build community together in a relaxed atmosphere.

A Place to Connect. A Space to Belong.

The Center for Jewish Student Life at York College is more than a space—it's a community. Engage, celebrate, and grow in a welcoming environment where tradition meets opportunity.

Meet Doris and Bernard

When first-year students arrive on campus, they begin the next chapter of their lives away from their homes and families' traditions. They will be living with a group of other students with diverse backgrounds and beliefs.

"This is the time when students need to find a way to maintain their traditions," said Doris Gordon '78, a trustee emerita of York College. "For Jewish students, an organization like Hillel allows them to explore and celebrate their identities with Jewish and non-Jewish students."

Hillel: The Foundation for Jewish Campus Life is the largest Jewish campus organization in the world, providing opportunities for students at more than 850 colleges and universities to engage in Jewish life. At York College, we host celebrations for the Jewish holidays and Shabbat services, where home cooked kosher meals are a staple for many of our students.

"My husband, Bernie, and I would like to see York's Hillel grow into something larger with a house that features traditional kosher meals," said Doris. "Jewish students need kosher meals, and some students may not be able to get home for dinners and holidays, so we want them to have a place to go." "That is why we decided to give to York," Bernie added.   "We believe in celebrating Jewish history and keeping traditions such as Shabbat (the weekly day of rest) alive," said Doris. "Our gift to York can help do that for many future students."
