What is dual enrollment for high school students?
Dual enrollment programs allow high school students, typically juniors and seniors, to take college courses at a real college or university while still enrolled in high school. This means they can take one or two college classes in addition to high school courses during a fall or spring semester. Dual enrollment is an excellent option for completing general education or foundational college courses before finishing high school.
Are dual enrollment courses cheaper than regular college courses?
Yes! Dual enrollment tuition is reduced for high school students. For the same courses, dual enrollment students in high school pay $155 per credit, compared to $760 per credit for regular undergraduate tuition.
Can home-schooled students participate?
Yes, home-schooled students can apply to the dual enrollment program at York College, with the same application requirements and tuition costs. Instead of a high school counselor, a homeschool evaluator must assist during the application process and give consent to enroll.
What dual enrollment classes should I take?
When choosing dual credit coursework at York College, students should consider their interests, favorite school subjects, and future degree and career goals. Most undergraduate programs require foundational courses in subjects like english, math, science, communication, history, psychology, and major-specific courses. Therefore, any course in these areas can provide valuable insights for future studies and career pursuits. Some students take courses they want to complete before college, while others choose courses related to their desired field of study to gain a deeper understanding.
Can dual enrollment students get financial aid?
Because they aren’t yet seeking a full degree, high schoolers in dual enrollment courses do not qualify to apply for federal financial aid such as student loans. Contact the Office of Financial Aid for any questions.
Will the dual enrollment classes I complete be on my high school transcript?
When you start taking dual enrollment classes as a high schooler, the courses you select may count towards your high school's specific graduation requirements. However, all courses you take for dual credit enrollment will contribute to your Grade Point Average (GPA) and appear as part of your transcripts when you apply to college full-time.
What if my dual enrollment credits don’t transfer to my associate’s or bachelor’s degree?
If dual enrollment credits don’t transfer to the major you pursue in college, they may still contribute to elective credits and help you complete some degree requirements early. Whether the college or university you attend takes dual enrollment credits or not, completing college-level courses as a high school junior or senior demonstrates a commitment to learning and exposes you to different academic areas at a more advanced level.
