York College of PA to Host Author Mecca Jamilah Sullivan on Feb. 22

York College of Pennsylvania will host Mecca Jamilah Sullivan, Ph.D., author of three award-winning books, at 5 p.m. on Feb. 22 in DeMeester Recital Hall, Evelyn and Earle Wolf Hall. The event is open to the public free of charge.

Sullivan’s books include Big Girl, a New York Times Editors’ Choice and winner of the Balcones Fiction Prize and the Next Generation Indie Book Award for First Novel; The Poetics of Difference: Queer Feminist Forms in the African Diaspora, winner of the William Sanders Scarborough Prize from the MLA; and the short story collection, Blue Talk and Love, winner of the Judith Markowitz Award from Lambda Literary.

In her writing, Sullivan explores the links between language, imagination, and bodily life in Black queer and feminist experience. Her stories and essays have appeared in Best New Writing, The Kenyon Review, Callaloo, Feminist Studies, American Fiction, Prairie Schooner, TriQuarterly, GLQ: Lesbian and Gay Studies Quarterly, American Literary History, The Scholar and Feminist, American Quarterly, Ebony.com, TheRoot.com, BET.com, and others.

A Pushcart Prize nominee, she is the winner of the Charles Johnson Fiction Award, the Glenna Luschei Fiction Award, the James Baldwin Memorial Playwriting Award, the 2021 Pride Index National Arts and Culture award, and honors from the National Endowment for the Arts, the Bread Loaf Writers’ Conference, The Yaddo Colony, the Hedgebrook Writers’ Retreat, Lambda Literary, the Publishing Triangle, and the Center for Fiction in New York City, where she received an inaugural Emerging Writers Fellowship.

Born and raised in Harlem, N.Y., she is an Associate Professor of English at Georgetown University and lives in Washington, D.C.
